Sex is Cheap
Young men have the upper hand in bed even when failing in life.
(Slate.com, circa Valentine's Day, 2011)
We keep hearing that young men are failing to adapt to contemporary life. Their financial prospects are impaired...yet there is one area in which men are very much in charge: premarital sexual relationships. Slate

Supply and Demand

(Gothamist) Scientists over at the "Slate Lab" have crunched the numbers on SEX and have come to some disturbing conclusions:

Despite being immature, unable to adapt to contemporary life, and generally less-educated, men are the bosses when it comes to premarital heterosexual relationships.

Why do women dislike sex? It is supply and demand. Their main argument: Women are losing the sexual-economics game because the main thing women want out of sex is commitment, and "the market 'price' of sex is currently very low."

Part of their proof is a scientific study of random men approaching females on college campuses saying, "Will you have sex with me right now?"

Most of the women said "No thanks." Three-quarters of men said yes to the same question. Therefore, women biologically do not want to have sex. It is not politically correct, but one can not argue with facts anecdotal evidence. (Which is what all science is based on, right?)

Are we living in a New Age when women can desire and enjoy sex for the sake of sex? Or are we living in an age when, according to a NY Magazine cover article, men can no longer have orgasms due to excess pornographic consumption?

Is this baiting a trend? Ladies, who needs to worry about icky sex when you can have a Text Boyfriend -- "no overtexting, no drama. He's fun and cute, and he's all about you!"

Thanks to Seven for advice and editing!

I'm heartbroken. The "War of the Sexes" is a losing battle. I thought we had sex to feel wanted, or the heady spell of love, or to sidestep our shame about having as much sexual desire as men. On average. Esteem, cupidity, and escapism are good explanations. We have no appetite for actually having sex only because we feel full. And it is easy to feel full or turned off about food when everyone is offering you cheap free meals. "Supply and demand" explains a lot more. But economics is not my forte. Relationships are. Or they were. Or I thought they were. The battle is not being won. Science, help!

Many of us think we know the answer to why women have sex. Three obvious guesses might be:
  1. for pleasure
  2. because they're in love
  3. to have children.
Social scientists David Buss and Cindy Meston wanted to get scientific about it. They asked 1,500 women why they had sex and came up with a list of 237 different reasons.

The research covers sexual attraction, orgasm and pleasure, love and bonding, and such things as sexual competition among women, and its effects on social status and reputation.
